War is over

War is over. Microsoft will not attack Linux or it's users any more. Linux isn't cancer and it isn't communist product for couple of months now. I think this is history.

Now it's time for the real battle; Microsoft vs. Linux companies.

I expect Microsoft's Linux distribution by the end of 2010 (maybe even sooner), and then I expect Novell will die (we will see if they will be first to fall). Microsoft is company which exist only cause of money. They don't care were the money comes from. Linux, Windows, selling shoes? It isn't important. They figured out that, if they continue FUDing Linux, they will only loose. They still can loose, but not without a fight.

FUD will not stop, it will be directed at companies, not technology. Start collecting ammo and weapons, big battles are coming.

  • Why do you think the war on Linux is over? I have seen evidence to the contrary: Microsoft is raising numerous legal proceedings regarding what it considers almost 300 patent and copyright infringements on "its" technologies. True, that these legal proceedings are directed at companies, but they are not focused at companies in particular; they are still focused at the specific technologies that are infringing on what MS believes to be their IP. Unless you have some evidence to the contrary? (I didn't see any links in your post, so I assumed not.)

  • Those 'patents' are directed to collecting customers. If they wanted to destroy Linux and if that would be possible with patents, they would do it years ago.

Now they are FUDing companies. 'Let us be your Linux provider, and we will not sue you.' This isn't war against Linux, that's war against companies.

  • I'm almost sure that patents are like licenses for Linux, I'm probably wrong though. Still I think that Novell is just retarded. Especially since they cannot defend themselves but become Microsoft's "Lapdog". As you can clearly see that Microsoft is intimidated by Linux's abilitys.

  • The way they see is that they got a mature core that will be slowly turning into a burning platform. They got
    - New research kernel in the development (just as the NT kernel was once)
    - Good relations and support from the hardware vendors
    - Lots of technology they have licensed from other parties
    - Possibility to turn what is theirs into open source
    - Lots of own IP that will continue to be good revenue generators
    - Actually pretty huge developer communities
    - A complete ecosystem that they control and that is creating products on top of their core

They could really genuinely start offering Linux spiced up with their own extra stuff. That is a true possibility. The other possibilities just seem from business standpoint still more exciting.

Basically it's not about the products, it's all about the business model and strategy. Risk vs reward ratio will be important for them and at some point they might just randomly choose - the decisions really are that hard in the end. You remember those motivational posters saying "stupid plan is better than no plan"? It's like that in the end.

Whether some phase of their relations with their environment is over or not, we are yet to see that. I can assure you something in any case: When you literally lead the largest, the most growing in overall, and in the future most prestiguous industry it is sure you won't stay still. We'll have a lot of fun in the near future!

  • they will only loose. They still can loose,

    LOSE.

Its lose, not loose. Similarly misused is looser instead of loser.

Lose is what SCO is going ot do in its Linux lawsuit. Loose is the state of your screw if you buy their argument.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled blog.

  • We need to drop this military language. Really. Please!

  • What scares me the most IS a MS Linux distribution! They have the potential to fragment the community as they have fragmented other communities/technologies. MS has always insisted on developing their own standards when competing ( HTML, Open Doc, Active Dir, Java, etc...)
I can definitely see them trying something like this in Open Source.

  • MS Linux distribution by 2010?? Mmmmm, i agree, but maybe a couple of years more (2012??).
I think that is what will happen in a not so far future. MS is not going to let his customers go to another company. If customers are looking for Linux technology, MS will offer it, adding its own staff, of course.
This will be a very interesting battle between companies, nor operating systems.

    We will see "soon"

  • Novell will survive (and that's good, because they have important role in GNOME). But Linspire and Xandros don't have any chance (and that's also good, because they are useless).
